Jerez de la Frontera
WSBK test with the full Team APRECO on site
At the end of January, the Yamaha-supported Team APRECO took part in the official WSBK test in Jerez de la Frontera with Twan Smits. At the Circuito de Jerez Ángel Nieto, Smits completed two test days together with the full Team APRECO and numerous international Superbike teams. The conditions once again proved to be highly challenging. As forecast, rain and constantly changing track conditions dominated large parts of the test. Wet sections, slowly drying mixed conditions and only short dry phases significantly limited the planned test programme and restricted the available track time.

Solid base feeling on the Yamaha R1
Despite the difficult conditions, Twan Smits confirmed the strong level he had already shown during the previous WSBK test. From the first laps on the Yamaha R1, he immediately felt comfortable and was able to continue from the point where he had finished the last test in November.
“From the very first run, I had exactly the same feeling as when we ended the previous test. That was extremely positive, especially because I hadn’t ridden since then,” said Smits. “It was also really good to have the full Team APRECO on site. We could work together straight away and build on our base, even with limited track time.”
Focus on new components and setup work
During the test, the focus was on working through key elements of the test programme and evaluating new components for the upcoming season. Among other things, the team was able to test a new shock and further setup changes on the Yamaha R1. However, not all planned items could be completed due to the conditions.
In wet conditions, the work was particularly limited, as the track was often neither fully wet nor fully dry. A small slip in the final corner in the rain remained without consequences and did not affect the overall positive impression of the test.

Looking ahead to Portimão
Despite the limited number of laps, Twan Smits drew a positive overall conclusion from the two days in Jerez. Even with only a small number of dry laps, the package consisting of rider, Yamaha R1 and Team APRECO showed strong potential.
“Even with very few dry laps, we were immediately fast and competitive. That gives us confidence,” Smits added. “Now we just need to keep working and continue at the next test.”
Following the Jerez test, the focus now shifts to the next WSBK test in Portimão, where the team hopes for more stable weather conditions to continue preparations for the upcoming season.
